Accomplishments as a Port Commissioner

John's leadership has been critical to keep our Port thriving during trade tariff issues - ensuring a strong supply chain, jobs and planning for the future. 

  • Elected to four terms as Port Commissioner, serving over 17 years total, and serving as a Pierce County Superior and District Court Judge for over two decades,​ 

  • Appointed twice by the Governor to the Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board as the state’s port representative to this Board which improves freight corridors, 

  • In 2020 and again this year, 2025, he is serving as Port of Tacoma Commission President and Co-chair to the NW Seaport Alliance, which manages both Seattle and Tacoma marine seaports. Keeping the port running strong during trade tariffs and other supply chain interruptions, 

  • Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board and Growth Management Policy Board, 

  • Helped lead the Port of Tacoma in a comprehensive strategic planning effort which identified environmental issues, along with jobs, as clear priorities for our community. We are now developing work plans and updating the strategic plan in 2025, 

  • Helped to develop a clean truck plan eliminating older trucks from our gateway and adopted a Clean Air Strategy and implementation plan after years of study and collaboration with other Ports, bringing cleaner shore  power to our ships. 

  • Served as President of the Washington Public Ports Association and named an Honorary Life Member, 

  • Former casual longshoreman for 10 years in Tacoma while going to school, 

  • Served for 12 years on the Judicial Qualifications Commission and served on the Committee that wrote Judicial Canons of Ethics for Judges, 

  • Volunteers at Mount Rainier, officiates High School Sports, Boys and Girls Club of South  Puget Sound Alumni Hall of Fame, founding Board member of the Sexual Assault Center Board
